Twenty years into their career, Tegan and Sara have recorded a new album that is based on the first songs they ever wrote. Hey, I’m Just Like You – their ninth studio album overall and first since 2016’s Love You to Death – will be released on September 27 on Sire.
Hey, I’m Just Like You is a return to Tegan and Sara’s rock and punk roots, with a punch of pop production. Recorded in Vancouver, Canada in April and May 2019, the album recasts the remarkable innate songwriting talents both possessed as teenagers, and allows these previously unreleased songs to benefit from the studio expertise they have gained in the past two decades – a period that has seen them release eight studio albums, earning seven Gold certifications and one Double Platinum certification in the process. Defiant and melodramatic, the songs capture the exultation and grief of first loves, first losses, ecstatic kiss-offs, and psychedelic tributes to friendship.
What happens when a nation that was born to run, and to rev engines into the wild frontier, runs into the full stop that is our current social and political climate? The answer, my friend, is somewhere “In the Morse Code of Brake Lights,” as The New Pornographers would have it on their eighth album. There’s a deep climatic unease running through these 11 tracks that’s matched only by the sheer musical glee with which the band addresses the prevailing mood of the moment. It’s an album in which foreboding and bliss somehow go hand in hand—mixing founder A.C. Newman’s nearly symphonic levels of pop arrangement and harmony with a careening quality that feels unsafe at any speed (to quote the famous Ralph Nader phrase that the opening track also borrows).
In 1964, the National Film Board of Canada asked John Coltrane to record the soundtrack for a French-language film titled “Le chat dans le sac” (“The Cat in the Bag”). In June of that year, Coltrane’s ‘Classic Quartet’ entered Rudy Van Gelder’s studio and recorded five previously-recorded Coltrane originals. For many years, viewers of the film who recognized the music thought that they were listening to the original recordings, though in fact they were new and had never been heard.
Genre-bending band Whiskey Myers have played nearly 2,000 live shows since their emergence in 2008 and have sold out more than 115 headlining shows in the last year alone. As Esquire proclaims, "Whiskey Myers are the real damn deal." USA Today describes the band led by frontman Cody Cannon as "a riff-heavy blend of Southern rock and gritty country that has earned comparisons to the Allman Brothers Band and Led Zeppelin," with Rolling Stone noting "it's the seminal combination of twang and crunchy rock & roll guitars that hits a perfect sweet spot." Their most recent album, Mud, reached No. 1 on the iTunes country chart with single "Stone" hitting Top 10 all genre and their fifth studio album, which they self-produced for the first time, is set for release this fall. Whiskey Myers was featured in Paramount Network's new Kevin Costner hit show "Yellowstone" with synced songs throughout season one as well as an appearance by the band in episode four as part of the storyline, with the band set to return with additional synced songs in season two.
Platinum-selling artist Jon Pardi announced his highly-anticipated new album, tour and single titled Heartache Medication. Set for release on September 27, Pardi s upcoming album, Heartache Medication, includes the album s lead single and title track Co-written by Pardi, Barry Dean and Natalie Hemby, Pardi revealed the new single showcases a taste of what is to come on the next record exclusively to the Associated Press, noting the songs lift you up. They put you in a higher place. "The single 'Heartache Medication' has an 80 s George Strait 'Fool Hearted Memory' feel to it, and is something people can dance to, said Pardi. That s something I really wanted for this album. There really are no sad songs on this record-it covers a range of subjects, but is ultimately about moving on, and having a good time. Recognized for his "state-of-the-art blend of traditional instrumentation and progressive grooves that points to country's future (Rolling Stone) and as a leader among a growing number of artists bringing back fiddle, steel and twang while still finding ways to freshen the sound (People), Pardi again serves as a co-producer on the new album, Heartache Medication. Heartache Medication is the follow up to Pardi s co-produced Platinum-selling breakthrough #1 album California Sunrise, which featured Multi-Platinum, chart-topping hits including Dirt on My Boots, Head Over Boots, Heartache on the Dancefloor and Night Shift." The CMA and ACM Award-winner also revealed plans for his HEARTACHE MEDICATION TOUR
Like a personal fantasy, Tove Lo invites you close enough to see, hear, and feel the moment just before it evaporates back into the ether once more. In 2018, she officially relocated to Los Angeles and dove headfirst into creating her fourth full-length, Sunshine Kitty. Stars Are the Light, the luminous seventh album by the American psych explorers Moon Duo, marks a progression into significantly new territory. From a preoccupation with the transcendental and occult that informed Ripley Johnson and Sanae Yamada's guitar-driven psych rock, and reached it's apotheosis in the acclaimed Occult Architecture diptych, Stars Are the Light sees the band synthesize the abstract and metaphysical with the embodied and terrestrial. Says Yamada: "We have changed, the nature of our collaboration has changed, the world has changed, and we wanted the new music to reflect that." Branching out from Occult Architecture Vol. 2, the album has a sonic physicality that is at once propulsive and undulating; it puts dance at the heart of an expansive nexus that connects the body to the stars. These are songs about embodied human experience - love, change, misunderstanding, internal struggle, joy, misery, alienation, discord, harmony, celebration - rendered as a kind of dance of the self, both in relation to other selves and to the eternal dance of the cosmos. Taking disco as it's groove-oriented departure point, Stars Are the Light shimmers with elements of '70s funk and '90s rave. Johnson's signature guitar sound is at it's most languid and refined, while Yamada's synths and oneiric vocals are foregrounded to create a spacious percussiveness that invites the body to move with it's mesmeric rhythms. With Sonic Boom (Spacemen 3, Spectrum) at the mixing desk in Portugal's Serra de Sintra, (known to the Romans as "The Mountains of the Moon") the area's lush landscape and powerful lunar energies exerted a strong influence on the vibe and sonic texture of the album. On embracing disco as an inspiration, Yamada says, "It's something we hadn't referenced in our music before, but it's core concepts really align with what we were circling around as we made the album. Disco is dance music, first and foremost, and we were digging our way into the idea of this endless dance of bodies in nature. We were also very inspired by the space and community of a disco - a space of free self-expression through dance, fashion, and mode of being; where everyone was welcome, diversity was celebrated, and identity could be fluid; where the life force that animates each of us differently could flower."
Desert Dove is the new album from Michaela Anne and her first on Yep Roc Records. It was recorded in LA and produced by Sam Outlaw and Kelly Winrich (Delta Spirit). Michaela has been lauded for her timeless voice and narrative depth and this record takes that to the next level. The songwriting is confessional and unforgettable without being saccharin or self-indulgent; the tracks call to mind Michaela's diverse influences - everything from Stevie Nick's powerful voice and Fleetwood Mac's vibey arrangements to the Dixie Chick's incredible balance of conviction and catchiness - all showcasing her stellar voice and distinct vision.
Since moving to New York, Corey King has focused on being adaptable in many musical environments without sacrificing his musical integrity. He has had the opportunities to perform/record with notable artists such as Bonobo, Esperanza Spalding, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Glen Hansard, Mos Def, Gil-Scott Heron, D.J. Premiere, ATrak, Doc Daneeka, Nick Hook, José James, Bilal, Mary J. Blige, Hercules and Love Affair, Mark Ronson, Maria Daulne (Zap Mama), Lauryn Hill. Whereas his 2016 outing Lashes dabbled more with rock and indie influences, A Loveless Sunken Sun manifests the breadth of King’s influences; a picturesque world that is equal parts Electronic, Krautrock and Afrobeat. There is a feeling of rootless-ness in this record as King processes gratitude, wonder, and sorrow related to the demands of travel, new responsibilities, and loss of his grandmother. This atmospheric and richly impressionistic work offers a glimpse of King’s moody and rewarding experience of life. The release will be available on standard weight, black vinyl.

Sweden’s Opeth are preparing to release their most important record to date with “In Cauda Venenum”. Certainly, fans and critics will have their opinion, but few records in the Swedes’ oeuvre are as engaging, delicate, panoramic, intense, and musical as Opeth’s lucky thirteenth. Sporting a clever Travis Smith cover—replete with inside jokes and a nod to King Diamond—a masterful Park Studios (The Hellacopters, Graveyard) production, Opeth’s usual five-star musicianship, and lyrics entirely in Swedish, “In Cauda Venenum” raises the bar markedly. While a record in Swedish is a first—there’s also an English version—for frontman and founding member Mikael Åkerfeldt, the 10 songs on offer feel and sound completely natural. As if years of listening to and being a fan of Swedish rock and hard rock has paid off. In a way, Opeth have come home. But the Swedish lyrics of the primary edition of “In Cauda Venenum” shouldn’t distract from the quality presented in Opeth’s new songs, the lot of which sneak up and take control after repeated listens. “In Cauda Venenum” is like that, tricky in its complicated simplicity, resourceful in its ability to charm with delightful if wistful melodies. Really, it’s just Opeth being Opeth.
The Duke of Spook has returned once more from beyond the grave to reveal the “NECROPHAZE!” This latest, full length offering from the ghouls of WEDNESDAY 13 will be available on September 27th, 2019 via Nuclear Blast Records. Heavily influenced by the real life night terror occurrences of Wednesday himself, historical serial killers, and a slew of 80’s horror films, the ideas behind NECROPHAZE are bizarrely familiar, frightening, and a hell of a lot of fun. Being a collector of both media and toys, Wednesday 13 was inspired by a craving for variety to create dual album artwork for this release. The covers showcase either end of the horror spectrum with a “Creepshow” comic book vibe for the LP artwork, and the eeriness of something akin to John Carpenter’s “The Fog” adorning the CD.
